A local art foundation now owns this building and plans to convert it into a contemporary gallery that can function as a cultural center and exhibition space, showcasing a variety of art and cultural events. Just like the old city of Montreal, the original building could be categorized as a sedimentary entity, which is saturated with layer upon layer of construction, demolition, and partial recycling of physical boundaries and foundations. The rich history has resulted in complex circulations and varying elevations in this building. Thurs deciding on a strategy of intervention requires an honest assessment of possibility. It is impossible to meet the basic needs of an exhibition space while completely preserving and restoring the current remain. While only preserving the exterior facade and rebuilding everything within it will end up nothing more than a duplicity mask. &nbsp;The project is looking for is a palimpsest of physical building layers that can accommodate the program of a contemporary art museum while preserving the authenticity of the original. The existing building sets the keynote with its materiality and spatial organization. The topography and slat-like organization of spaces were considered as the specificity of the old building and were preserved. The objective is to construct a gradience of temporality through three different but complementary approaches: integrated restoration, restoration with an explicit presence of the new, and new construction. Rather than simply adding spaces to accommodate contemporary art, the project is trying to curate sensory experiences. Through Incremental restoration, this project dissolves the binary opposition between new and old. The architecture unfolds as a journey of excavation, a physical and metaphysical descent into tranquility. Pathways, subtly integrated into the park’s topography, lead visitors into sunken courtyards and inward-facing spaces, where time slows, and the senses engage with the subtleties of texture, light, and sound. Ya'an holds a prominent position in tea production, boasting a tea culture with a history spanning hundreds of years. This architectural endeavor takes cues from the region's conventional sloping roof architecture while introducing modifications to the building's layout. The resulting design finds a nuanced equilibrium between the vernacular and the defamiliarized. The leaf-like floor plan introduces a sense of lightness to the eaves, generating a distinctive architectural contour that gracefully follows the water's edge. The central eaves of each structure adopt a gently downward gesture, subtly redirecting occupants' visual focus toward the distant horizon. Meanwhile, the terminations of each room feature vertical spaces that provide visitors with unobstructed panoramic views of the nearby lake and mountains. The overall massing adapts to the site's natural elevation gradient from west to east, generating an interior spatial arrangement that emulates the cascading topography of the adjacent terraced tea fields. This intentional juxtaposition aims to challenge the traditional perceptions associated with "Exoticism." At the end of the central alley, visitors will find themselves entering an assembly of trees varying in height, and a continuous flow of red concrete planks that are alike wounds on the ground. In contrast to the prevailing symmetry and grandeur of the site's geometric layout, this “field” feels too Ordinary. It would be almost unnoticeable placed anywhere else, while here, we take it as an opportunity to curate unexpected engagement for visitors, drawing them into a unique experience. We envision visitors, from countries that once colonized and those that were colonized, guided by the flow of concrete plank, and drawn toward the heart of the field, where the planks get shorter and heavier, and the ground staunches like a pond. Here, visitors sit under the dome of tree canopies. The former empty plaza fades away, and so does the monolithic Grand Gallery of Evolution. The field becomes a sanctuary for contemplation and rest. As the trees mature, their increasing stature gradually reshapes the field’s initial peak elevation, diminishing the dominant presence of the Grand Gallery along the central axis of the site. This subtle transformation mirrors a healing process, echoing the recovery over time from the historical damages that imperialism inflicted upon colonized individuals, communities, and cultures. This simple field doesn't merely fill a void between the formal garden and the grand gallery; it curates a brief escape from the narrative of exoticism that is inherently Western and colonial. As visitors are drawn into the entrance, the contrast between the blue and the warm-colored ground, along with the plywood material, suggests stepping into a imaginative body of water. Here, the blue walkways are not mere paths but “Rivers” in abstract, and the wooden hues of the wings and plaza transform into metaphorical “Shores”. As one meanders on the plaza, the 450mm elevation of the installation emerges as an unspoken boundary, reminiscent of a shoreline’s edge. It follows a journey across the plaza, a search for the ‘onboard’ entrance, where metaphors of ‘Shore’ and ‘River’ elegantly invert. The installation’s dual figures – the inner figure and outer figure – dialogues with its surroundings: the outer figure, a reimagining of public spaces, pays homage to the plaza’s central tree and the statue of two pilgrims, while the inner figures, carved as social tunnels, craft intersections of communal engagement. The elvated height of the table allows visitors to gain a panoramic view of Vina Lanciano beyond the massive foliage. The long table acts like a mian stem that all the upscaled leaf-form chairs are attached to it as if they grow out from the table. Multiple environment elements coexsit in the area. The linearity of table and the vast amount of supporting legs represents the cultivation form across Vina Lanciano. The continous yet varied surface forms within the table reflect on the curved topographic change of the river and the land. Meanwhile, the lifted curved surface created a arched gate as a passway, which may recall people's memory of the bridge near the site as well.25 tall chairs of similar but different forms are placed along the long table, while structurally attached to it in order to fortify the integral stability and stifiness. The type of chairs can be mainly described as three: individuals, booleaned with the table, and multiples grouped into one. Most of the chairs are designed with seats lower than the height of the long table, while some of the chairs has its seat merged with the table due to the identical elevation. Some chairs are combinations of several ones. Despite being lined up in the same direction, various of rotations and inclinations are made to the chairs. A vital image of family is thus created by the sequence of resembled objects redolent of sprouting foliage in breeze or multitudes dancing and farming. They are coexisting solitary objects with distinct gestures yet united to share the same table and landscape.
